Comparing the best data tokenization software for 2026: 1. Enigma Vault, 2. TokenEx / IXOPAY, 3. Skyflow, 4. Basis Theory, 5. VGS, 6. Evervault, 7. Thales CipherTrust, 8. Protegrity, 9. OpenText Voltage SecureData, 10. Fortanix DSM.
Most data tokenization software pages look alike until you compare what sits underneath. I look at four things: where the real values are stored, which token formats the tool supports, what the vendor can prove about compliance and what you will pay. Those answers decide whether a tool fits your stack.
Which Data Tokenization Software Is Best? Quick Comparison
The best data tokenization software depends on what you protect: Enigma Vault is built for enterprises, startups and SMBs that want card, PII and file vaulting from one API, while Thales, Protegrity and OpenText Voltage fit large legacy enterprise estates.

What Does Data Tokenization Software Do?
Data tokenization software replaces sensitive values, such as card numbers, SSNs and health details, with tokens that have no usable meaning, and returns the original only to authorized requests.
Your application stores the token where the real value used to be. The real value lives in a secured vault, or you can recover it only through cryptographic keys, so a stolen database of tokens is worth very little to an attacker. Systems that hold only tokens often fall outside the scope of audits such as PCI DSS.
This guide covers data security tokenization only. I left out blockchain asset tokenization, language-model tokenization and masking-only tools, because they solve different problems. For the basics, read my guide to data tokenization use cases and how to choose a solution. For the architecture choice behind most of the tools below, see vault vs vaultless tokenization.
How I Evaluated the Best Data Tokenization Tools
I scored every tool on six criteria: token model, token formats, compliance evidence, searchability of protected data, integration and exit, and pricing transparency.
- Token model: vault-based, vaultless, proxy or encryption-based. This drives performance, portability and your audit scope.
- Token formats: random tokens, or format-preserving tokens that fit your existing database fields.
- Compliance evidence: the certifications and attestations the vendor publishes, such as PCI DSS, SOC 2 and HIPAA support.
- Searchability: whether you can look up or join records without detokenizing them.
- Integration and exit: APIs, SDKs, deployment options and how hard it is for you to leave.
- Pricing transparency: whether a starting price is public.
Where a vendor does not publish a fact on its own site, the card says so instead of guessing. Review scores are the ones G2 and Gartner Peer Insights showed on October 8, 2026. The images come from each vendor's own public pages.
The 10 Best Data Tokenization Software Tools
1. Enigma Vault: Best for Enterprises, Startups and SMBs That Need Card, PII and File Vaulting
Enigma Vault is a vault-based tokenization platform that protects payment cards, structured data and files through one REST API, for enterprises as well as startups and SMBs, with a free tier and public pricing.
Enigma Vault splits protection into Card Vault, Data Vault and File Vault. You send the sensitive value to the vault, store the token it returns and call the vault again only when you need the original. Card Vault also forwards stored cards to your payment gateway, so card numbers never pass through your own servers. NoPII, a separate product, tokenizes personal data before it reaches an LLM.
| Token model | Vault-based, with random tokens generated by a cryptographically secure generator |
| Compliance | PCI DSS Level 1 service provider, SOC 2 Type II, BAA available, 99.99% uptime SLA |
| Deployment | SaaS REST API with OAuth2, US and EU regions, AWS Marketplace |
| Pricing | Card, Data and File Vault each start free (Lite), then $49.99/mo (Plus) and $249.99/mo (Premium). NoPII is free for 1M tokens a month, then $50/mo, with custom Enterprise plans. |

How to Choose Data Tokenization Software by Scenario
Match the tool to the data you protect and the team that runs it: payments teams start with card-focused vaults, SaaS teams with PII vaults and large enterprises with platform-level products.
- Reducing PCI DSS scope: look at Enigma Vault Card Vault, TokenEx / IXOPAY, VGS and Basis Theory. All of them focus on keeping card numbers off your servers.
- PII or PHI in a SaaS application: consider Enigma Vault Data Vault or Skyflow, which isolate sensitive fields behind access policies.
- Enterprise databases and legacy formats: shortlist Thales CipherTrust, Protegrity and OpenText Voltage, which handle format-preserving tokens at scale.
- LLM and AI pipelines: pick a tool that tokenizes personal data before it reaches a model. Enigma Vault NoPII and Skyflow both target this. See my guide to PII tokenization for AI.
- Startups, SMBs and small budgets: start with a free tier. Enigma Vault's Lite plans and NoPII's free monthly tokens cost nothing, while several alternatives start near $1,000 a month.
Common Mistakes When Buying Data Tokenization Software
- Treating encryption and tokenization as the same thing. You can reverse encryption with a key, while a token has no mathematical link to the original.
- Ignoring exit costs. Ask how you would export your tokens and values if you left, and whether the token formats are portable.
- Trusting marketing labels. Terms like zero-knowledge or bank-grade need a precise definition and evidence from the vendor.
- Skipping governance on detokenization. Anything allowed to detokenize stays in your audit scope, so limit who and what can do it.
- Buying without a pilot. Test latency, throughput and search behavior with your own data before you commit.
Try Enigma Vault Free
With Enigma Vault, you can tokenize cards, structured fields and files through one API, whether you run an enterprise program or a startup, and you can begin on a free plan.
